Three Things You Need to Know about Librela
Librela, developed by Zoetis, is a new, monthly injectable monoclonal antibody that provides pain relief for dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. It was just introduced to the United States market. By targeting Nerve Growth Factor, thus preventing pain transmission, this innovative therapy can significantly improve the quality of life for debilitated dogs who find it difficult to stand, walk, and perform daily activities. Many dog owners have described its effects as miraculous, as their dogs become active and pain-free again. However, it should be used judiciously and only for the right patients. In this video and written summary, we will discuss three key things you need to know about Librela.
Librela only provides pain relief
Librela only provides pain relief and this is one of the most critical points. You still need to provide joint support with supplements, antiinflammatories, exercise and most likely canine rehabilitation. The health of the joint and surrounding muscles need more therapy than just a shot to reduce pain.
Use with caution in dogs showing neurologic issues
Librela was not designed for use in dogs with spinal arthritis or other painful neurologic conditions. Use with caution in any dog with neurologic symptoms such as weakness, incoordination, ataxia, or proprioception deficits.
After receiving the shot wait 30 minutes at your Veterinarian’s office
After your dog receives the shot, wait 15-30 minutes at your veterinarian’s office even if it is just in the parking lot. If your dog has an adverse reaction, you will be able to get help quickly.
